Warden Message #3 issued by the U.S. Embassy on Tropical Storm Noel

November 2, 2007

This Warden Message is being issued to alert American citizens residing in and traveling in The Bahamas that the Embassy reopened this morning, November 2, 2007. Tropical Storm Noel, whose rains have killed at least 108 people in the Caribbean, moved away from The Bahamas, after strengthening into a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic on Thursday night. The Bahamas suffered heavy rains and strong winds.

The Bahamas, like all countries in and near the Caribbean Sea, is still potentially at risk from hurricanes. The official hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.  Major hurricanes can cause extensive property damage and loss of life. Do not be caught unprepared. Develop a personal hurricane plan for yourself and your family. Please refer to our website for additional preparedness information.

For the latest security information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor our website, http://nassau.usembassy.gov and the Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet web site at http://travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution, Public Announcements, Travel Warnings, and health-information resources can be found, as well as the link to Current Hurricane Information: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/hurricane_season/hurricane_season_2915.html.

Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the U.S., or, for callers outside the U.S. and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. These numbers are available from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (except U.S. federal holidays).

For further information please consult the Consular Information Sheet for The Bahamas: http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_989.html.
