Journalists discuss Press Freedom at half-day Media Seminar
June 16, 2009
On Tuesday, June 9, some 41 print and broadcast journalists, newspaper columnists, photo journalists and freelance writers participated in a half-day media seminar hosted by the U.S. Embassy's Public Affairs Section. The event was facilitated by Freelance Writer and Editor Ronald Wimer and featured a stimulating panel discussion on “Freedom of The Press” by journalists from The Nassau Guardian, The Tribune, ZNS TV-13, Jones Communications, Ltd., Island 102.9 FM Radio, and GEMS 105.9 FM Radio.
In his opening remarks U.S. Charge d’ Affaires Timothy Zuniga-Brown reminded the audience that “freedom of the press is a hallmark of every free, democratic society”. A free media he said “is essential to democracy because it fosters transparency and accountability, both of which are also prerequisites for sustained development”.
