U.S. Ambassador John D. Rood Reads at Abaco Schools

March 30, 2007

On Friday, March 23, United States Ambassador John D. Rood was once again promoting literacy and reading to primary school children.  The Ambassador visited Treasure Cay, Abaco, where he read to 290 students from Treasure Cay Primary and Cooper’s Town Primary Schools.  Due to heavy rainfall earlier that morning, the Principal of Treasure Cay Primary; Mrs. Mertis Russell made arrangements for the event to be held at the Full Gospel Assemblies of God Church in Cooper’s Town.

Teachers, parents, American residents and members of the local government administration attended the event.  The visit to Abaco marked the 53rd and 54th school Ambassador Rood has visited since he initiated the reading program in January 2005.  Since that time he has made it a priority to promote literacy and reading in schools throughout New Providence and the Family Islands.  Ambassador Rood has said that one of the things he will miss the most when he leaves office is the primary school reading program.
