U.S. Ambassador Rood Announces Departure in New Year

November 22, 2006

Ambassador John Darrell Rood, who has served as the 11th United States Ambassador to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, announced today that he intends to return to private life in Jacksonville, Florida early in 2007.  Ambassador Rood was appointed by President Bush and began his tenure in September 2004.  Ambassador Rood informed Prime Minister Christie of his projected departure in a November 22 courtesy call.

Announcing his decision to Embassy staff, Ambassador Rood said that it had been an honor to have had the opportunity to represent the President and people of the United States to the government and people of one of our closest neighbors and closest friends in the hemisphere.  He noted that our shared commitment to democracy, our common determination to prevent drug trafficking, and the enduring ties of family and friendship between our people have strengthened our relationship and made it a vital partnership for both our countries.

The Ambassador said he has particularly welcomed the many chances he has had to meet with children throughout the Bahamas in his school visits and reading program.  He looks forward to continuing to visit schools in the coming months to reinforce the importance of education and literacy.   He said he has been overwhelmed by the warmth of his reception from the children throughout the country and believes the extraordinary young people he has met will ensure a bright future for The Bahamas.

Ambassador Rood thanked the government and people of The Bahamas for their warm welcome, their generous hospitality, and outstanding cooperation throughout his tenure.
