U.S. Ambassador John Rood Reads at schools in Cat Island
January 22, 2007
Continuing his reading program in schools throughout The Bahamas, U.S. Ambassador John D. Rood visited Cat Island on Tuesday, January 16. The first stop was Dumfries Primary School where students from Dumfries, Orange Creek, and Bennett’s Harbour gathered for the special event. Following a brief cultural display including the “Quadrille” dancing by Bennett’s Harbour Primary and the rendition of “The Bahama Islands” by Orange Creek Primary, students quickly settled and listened attentively as Ambassador Rood explained his work and role as U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas. The Ambassador further encouraged the students to read and to develop a love for reading. He told them to practice reading out loud to their siblings and their parents as reading stimulates their minds -- reading, he said, is the key to success. Ambassador Rood also lauded the teachers for fine work they do in educating the children.
Following the visit to Dumfries Primary School it was off to New Bight Primary School where the Ambassador spoke to students from New Bight and Old Bight Primary Schools. At both schools he invited students to assist him in reading a book on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each of the five schools received a donation of books from the Ambassador.
Joining Ambassador Rood on the visit was Mr. Philp “Brave” Davis, Member of Parliament for Cat Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador; Dr. Davidson Hepburn; Dr. Prince Bonamy, Member of the Public Service Commission, and Father Keith Cartwright of St. Christopher’s Anglican Church in Lyford Cay. District Administrator for Cat Island, Mrs. Brenda Bullard Colebrook also attended both school visits.
