August 21, 2006

Ms. Karen Tandy, Administrator of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration headquartered in Washington D.C, visited Nassau on August 16 for talks with U.S. Embassy officials and Bahamian law enforcement officials about the continued cooperation between the United States and The Bahamas in their joint efforts to stem the flow of illegal drugs through The Bahamas to the United States.  Following briefings on the Operations Bahamas Turks and Caicos (OPBAT) mission in The Bahamas, by U.S. Charge d’ Affairs, Dr. Brent Hardt, Ms. Tandy had further discussions with representatives from the Ministry of National Security, and the Royal Bahamas Police Force.

In an effort to provide a better perspective of OPBAT operations, Ms. Tandy flew via a U.S. Army black hawk helicopter to the OPBAT base in Georgetown, Exuma, where she met with personnel and had in-depth discussions of operations there.  During her visit, Ms. Tandy also participated in an assimilated drug interdiction exercise, demonstrating the outstanding level of cooperation on the ground and via communications with U.S. and Bahamian law enforcement officials.

Commenting on her visit Ms. Tandy says she was impressed with the fine level of cooperation by Bahamian law enforcement officials and pledged her continued support and commitment to the OPBAT mission in The Bahamas.
