U.S. Embassy expands business hours to improve customer service for American Citizens

January 19, 2007

The American Citizen Services office of the United States Embassy in Nassau announces expanded consular hours for non-emergency services to American citizens who are temporary visitors or permanent residents in The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Beginning February 5, 2007 the American Citizen Services office will be open on a walk-in basis from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  (The Office will be closed on a one-time basis on Friday, February 9). Please note that the Embassy closes for U.S. and Bahamian Holidays.

The American Citizens Services office can notarize documents, issue passports, and register American children born abroad. It also provides Americans with information on absentee voting, selective service registration, receiving federal benefits, and filing U.S. tax forms.

For additional information, please visit http://nassau.usembassy.gov or contact the American Citizen Services office at acsn@state.gov, or during business hours at (242) 322-1181.  In case of an emergency occurring after hours or on weekends, please call 242-328-2206. Consular officers assist Americans who encounter serious legal, medical, or financial difficulties. Although consular officers cannot act as legal counsel or representatives, they can provide the names of local attorneys and doctors, provide loans to destitute Americans, and provide information about dangerous conditions affecting overseas travel or residence.

All American citizens residing in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands are urged to register at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ and to email the U.S. Embassy at acsn@state.gov to be added to the Embassy’s mailing list. You will then also receive all Warden messages, which are special announcements sent from the Department of State to citizens residing abroad. Travel registration at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows Americans to record information about their upcoming trip abroad that the Embassy and the U.S. Department of State can use to assist them in case of an emergency.
