U.S. Embassy supports “No Excuse Bahamas” campaign against domestic violence and sexual abuse

November 9, 2006

On Thursday, November 9, members of the “No Excuse Bahamas” organization paid a courtesy call on U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Dr. D. Brent Hardt.  The organization’s mandate is to educate people and heighten awareness of domestic violence and sexual abuse in The Bahamas.  During the visit, Dr. Hardt presented the organization with a check for $2,000.  The funds will be used to support the printing of a booklet that will feature art work, essays and poetry by students and victims of abuse, as well as independent articles by police and social service providers on the problems of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

Dr. Hardt thanked the organizers for their efforts stating, “We know that very often crime and social ills are linked with domestic violence.  We welcome your initiative in getting out into the schools to reach young people and let them know that they can seek help if they are trapped in a violent situation at home."

“No Excuse Bahamas” will stage a four day campaign November 10-13 to encourage silent sufferers to come forward, find solutions and healing for victims, encourage persons being abused to find help and take steps to stem the rise in abuse.

Among the events planned are a Fun, Run/Walk and a Mini Fair/Trade Show and Rally that will take place on Saturday, November 11 at the R.M. Bailey Park.  The rally will feature well known U.S. speaker and activist, Angela Rose, founder of P.A.V.E. (Promoting Awareness, Victim Empowerment), Bahamian speakers, Junkanoo, community discussions and free sessions with counselors.  On November 13, a full day seminar/workshop will be held at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel.  Funds raised will be donated to local women’s crisis centers.
