Passport Information
U.S. citizens resident in The Bahamas or Turks and Caicos Islands can submit their application for a new or renewed passport to the American Citizen Services unit in Nassau. All routine applications will be sent to the National Passport Processing Center in New Hampshire for processing, so that a passport incorporating a digitized image and other enhanced security features can be issued. This process generally takes five to ten working days. Please take this extra time into consideration when applying for or renewing passports at the Embassy, and plan your travel accordingly.
Emergency Passports
The U.S. Embassy in Nassau can issue passports for urgent, emergency travel during working hours. However, such passports will be limited in validity, and cannot be extended. Bearers will be required to exchange, at no additional cost, their limited-validity passports for a full-validity digitized passport upon completion of their urgent travel. Please come to the American Services Unit of the Embassy between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, and between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Fridays. Please note that the Embassy is closed for U.S. and Bahamian Holidays.
You will need to bring 2 passport quality photos and $100.00 for the fee payable in cash or certified check. You will need to complete 2 forms: Form DS-64 "Statement Regarding Lost or Stolen Passport", and DS-11 "Application for U.S. Passport". More information about Lost and Stolen passports, passport forms and photo specifications is available at the link to your right.
American citizens are required to present a valid U.S. passport to enter the United States. The American Citizens Services (ACS) Unit sometimes receives calls from Americans who have arrived in the Bahamas or Turks and Caicos Islands without proper travel documents. While these countries may allow you to enter without a passport, keep in mind that U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the airlines will demand to see proof of U.S. citizenship when you re-enter the United States. Normally, a Consular Officer cannot intervene on the behalf of Americans traveling without proof of citizenship.
