2009 Ambassador's HIV Prevention Program - Call for Funding Proposals

July 7, 2009

The U.S. Embassy in Nassau, in coordination with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Caribbean Regional Office of CDC’s Global AIDS Program, is pleased to announce the call for grant proposals for the 2009 Ambassadors’ HIV Prevention Program.  This year the program seeks proposals with an objective to promote discussion and action to combat HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination.

This call is in response to the growing adverse impacts that stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS have on both the individuals infected and society at large.  HIV/AIDS discrimination creates unnecessary barriers to preventing further infection, providing adequate care and support, and is indeed a human rights violation.  Instead of silencing and marginalizing those living with the disease, it is necessary to maintain visibility and openness about HIV/AIDS in order to facilitate the successful mobilization of the government, public, and private sectors to respond to the epidemic.

For these reasons, we are calling on community organizations, non-government organizations, faith-based organizations, government ministries, businesses, clubs, students, and other individuals to submit proposals to receive a one-time grant of up to $10,000 to fund community-based activities that will increase awareness of and fight HIV/AIDS stigma and discrimination.

Rules and Specifications:

-          Proposals must focus on a project to increase community awareness of HIV/AIDS and to promote discussion and action to combat HIV/AIDS in The Bahamas.

-          Applicants are encouraged to consider creative, original, and innovative activities including, but not limited to, promotional risk-reduction and prevention messages, voluntary counseling and testing promotion, training and education opportunities, promotional contests, etc.
