Opening Ceremony: Workshop on Electronic Evidence in Criminal Investigations

September 22, 2009

A three-day regional workshop on Electronic Evidence in Criminal Investigations opened on Tuesday, September 22 at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel.  The workshop sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, and the Organization of American States (OAS), will focus on gathering electronic evidence in investigations in a form suitable for prosecution.  The purpose is to assist countries in building capacity to investigate and prosecute any crime.  This workshop will discuss how to identify and gather electronic evidence such as e-mail, digital photos, use of the Internet, mobile phones, and computer-based records.  In his opening remarks U.S. Charge d’Affaires Timothy Zuniga-Brown noted that “we must continue to cooperate internationally in gathering and sharing electronic evidence.  It is only by working together that we will be able to successfully investigate and prosecute the criminals that are intent on causing us harm and threaten our way of life.”

The three-day workshop is intended for investigators and prosecutors who investigate or  prosecute significant crimes of any kind.  Instructors and participants will discuss these topics within the framework of a case study, from first report of a crime to preparation for trial.  The workshop will include participants from thirteen countries who will discuss how their legal systems shape investigations, the gathering of electronic evidence, and its use at trial.
