Embassy Employees participate in U.S. Voting Assistance Workshop
January 15, 2008
On Monday, January 14, Mr. Jack Markey, Chief Voting Action Officer from the Department of State, visited the Embassy to conduct a voting assistance workshop. Chargé d'Affaires Dr. Brent Hardt opened the workshop which informed official and private American citizens living in the Bahamas of their ability to vote. The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), headquartered at the Department of Defense, is responsible for administering the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, which gives active duty members of the military, their family members, and private and official U.S. citizens residing outside the United States both the right to vote and the mechanisms for acting on that right. Within the State Department, the Office of Overseas Citizens Services acts as a liaison between FVAP and embassies and consulates worldwide. Consular officers around the world are responsible for providing support to the millions of private and official American citizens abroad who are eligible to vote absentee.
For specific state-by-state voting information, please visit www.fvap.gov. The Voting Assistance Officer at the American Embassy is also available to answer questions about absentee voting.
