February 5, 2008
With Tuesday, February 5th's "Super Tuesday" primaries, Bahamians and Americans resident in The Bahamas are paying close attention to the run-up to the U.S. presidential elections scheduled for November, 2008. Chargé d’Affaires, Dr. D. Brent Hardt participated in a taped television interview on Super Tuesday with Juan McCartney, a reporter at Jones Communication Network, (JCN) Channel 14. During the interview, Dr. Hardt discussed the process for American citizens living in The Bahamas to participate in absentee voting and outlined American Citizen Services available at the Embassy for absentee voters.
Dr. Hardt also provided a brief overview about the importance of “Super Tuesday” for the both the Republican and Democratic Presidential nominees. As far as the outcome of the 2008 U.S. elections, Dr. Hardt noted that whichever party wins the relationship between the United States and The Bahamas will remain strong. He explained that both parties are committed to promoting prosperity and security in the Caribbean region and working with our partners to combat illegal drug-trafficking, illegal migration and trade in arms.
When asked if America is ready to accept the possibility of an African-American becoming the next President, Dr. Hardt responded, “Absolutely, they are ready for whoever is the best candidate." He said the United States had reached the point in its history where, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we judge people and candidates not on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character.”
